Bocas del Toro has a reputation that can make it sound like a destination designed almost exclusively for young backpackers, surfers and people who think sleeping until noon is a perfectly reasonable way to spend a Caribbean holiday. And there is some truth behind that reputation. Bocas Town on Isla Colón has a lively social scene, plenty of hostels, bars, water taxis, surf culture and nightlife, and the archipelago has become one of Panama's most popular destinations for younger independent travellers. Panama's official tourism information itself describes Bocas as a place for island hopping, surfing, diving and nightlife, while Bocas Town has the largest concentration of restaurants, accommodation, services and nightlife in the islands.
But saying that Bocas is "only for young people" would completely miss what makes the islands interesting. Bocas del Toro can absolutely be enjoyed by people of different ages. The real question is not your age. It is which part of Bocas you choose and what kind of holiday you want. Someone in their twenties looking for parties can have an entirely different Bocas experience from a couple in their fifties looking for snorkeling, wildlife, good food and a quiet room overlooking the Caribbean. A family can have another experience again. The archipelago is remarkably flexible because the islands have very different personalities.
Bocas Town is the young and social side
If you stay directly in Bocas Town, you are putting yourself in the centre of the action. This is the main settlement on Isla Colón and the most developed part of the archipelago. You will find restaurants, bars, hostels, hotels, supermarkets, pharmacies, tour operators, water taxis and plenty of people coming and going. It is also where much of the nightlife is concentrated.
For a young backpacker, this can be fantastic. You can arrive alone and meet people almost immediately. You can organize a snorkeling trip, find someone to go surfing with, join an island hopping excursion and end up drinking rum with people you met that afternoon. Bocas has that wonderfully unpredictable backpacker quality where a simple plan to have one beer can somehow turn into an evening involving three islands, a boat, reggae music and a sunrise.
There are also accommodations deliberately built around this social atmosphere. Places such as Klika Bocas Del Toro and Bambuda Bocas Town offer the kind of social environment that appeals particularly strongly to independent travellers. The town's nightlife can be energetic, and some accommodation and entertainment venues are specifically oriented toward people who want to socialize and party.
That does not mean an older traveller cannot stay there. It simply means that if your idea of a Caribbean vacation involves going to bed at 9 PM with a book while the people next door are still dancing, location becomes much more important than age.
Then there is the other Bocas
One of the great secrets of Bocas is that the archipelago isn't really one destination. It is a collection of islands and different environments connected by water taxis.
Isla Carenero sits directly across from Bocas Town and can feel completely different despite being only a very short boat ride away. It has beaches, restaurants, walking trails, surfing, snorkeling and accommodation ranging from social hostels to quieter boutique properties. The official tourism site describes Carenero as an alternative for people who want to escape some of the buzz of the centre without going far away.
That makes Carenero particularly interesting for couples and older travellers who want access to Bocas Town without necessarily sleeping in the middle of it. You can have dinner somewhere overlooking the Caribbean, walk along the island, go swimming or surfing during the day and take a water taxi into town when you want more activity.
For something even more relaxed, there are quieter properties around Carenero. Casa Acuario, for example, is a small family owned boutique hotel directly over the Caribbean, while Bocas Beachfront Lodge offers a more peaceful beachfront setting. These kinds of places demonstrate that Bocas is not dependent on dormitories and parties.
Bastimentos is another world
Then you have Isla Bastimentos, which feels much more wild and natural. Bastimentos contains the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park and offers beaches, jungle, wildlife, snorkeling, diving, surfing and cultural experiences. The island is also home to Old Bank, an Afro Caribbean community with its own distinctive history, food and culture.
This side of Bocas can be particularly attractive to travellers who have outgrown the idea that a vacation needs to revolve around nightlife. You can spend the morning walking through tropical forest, the afternoon swimming or snorkeling and the evening eating Caribbean food while listening to the sounds of the jungle.
There are also completely different accommodation styles here. You can find hostels and inexpensive accommodation, but there are also boutique hotels, eco lodges and more luxurious resorts. Red Frog Beach Island Resort is an example of the more nature oriented resort experience on Bastimentos.
This is where Bocas starts becoming very clearly a destination for all ages.
Families can enjoy Bocas too
Families sometimes hear the word "Bocas" and immediately imagine backpacker parties. That is understandable, because the nightlife is a genuine part of the destination. But there are plenty of daytime activities that have nothing to do with partying.
Snorkeling is one of the biggest attractions. The waters around the archipelago contain coral reefs and abundant marine life, and the official tourism information lists diving, snorkeling, wildlife watching and hiking among the major activities. There are more than 40 dive sites around Bocas according to Panama's tourism authority.
Families can also visit beaches, take boat trips, explore jungle trails, see wildlife and visit communities. Playa Estrella is famous for its clear water and starfish, while Zapatilla Cay offers beaches and snorkeling within Bastimentos Island National Marine Park.
There are also accommodations specifically suited to families. Playa Tortuga Hotel on Isla Colón, for example, is positioned as a relaxed family friendly resort with pools, ocean views and on site dining. TropicalArts Resort & Studios on Carenero is another example of accommodation designed to accommodate families as well as travellers looking for more space and independence.
So bringing children does not automatically mean that Bocas is the wrong destination. It simply means choosing your accommodation and location more carefully.
Older travellers can have a fantastic time
There is a strange assumption that once you reach a certain age you have to abandon places associated with backpackers. Bocas is a good example of why that isn't necessarily true.
Imagine spending a week in Bocas without entering a nightclub once. You could wake up beside the Caribbean, have breakfast overlooking the water, take a boat to a reef, snorkel for an hour, eat fresh seafood for lunch, return to your hotel for a siesta, walk along a beach in the late afternoon and have a cocktail while watching the sunset.
The next day you could take a nature tour. Another day could be devoted to Bastimentos. Another could involve kayaking through mangroves. You could explore Afro Caribbean culture, go diving, try surfing, take a boat through the islands or simply spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
That is still Bocas.
In fact, some of the most beautiful accommodation in the archipelago is aimed more toward travellers seeking peace, nature and comfort than partying. Properties such as Oasis at Bluff Beach and The View Restaurant offer a quieter, nature oriented experience away from Bocas Town.
But let's be honest about the party reputation
It would be dishonest to pretend that Bocas is some kind of sleepy Caribbean retirement island.
It isn't.
Bocas has a serious nightlife culture, and it is particularly visible around Bocas Town and some of the social hostels. The famous Filthy Friday Bocas is an island hopping party experience that has become one of the destination's best known attractions. There are also waterfront bars and nightlife venues on Carenero and Isla Colón.
For young travellers, this is a major attraction. For someone specifically looking for peace and quiet, it can be exactly the opposite of what they want.
The trick is understanding that Bocas nightlife is concentrated rather than universal. You don't have to participate simply because you are visiting Bocas. You can stay somewhere quieter and take a water taxi into town when you want restaurants, entertainment or nightlife.
Bocas is especially good for couples
Couples may actually find Bocas one of the most versatile destinations in Panama.
One person can spend the morning surfing while the other goes snorkeling. You can take boat trips together, explore beaches, eat Caribbean food, rent kayaks or simply sit on a dock watching the boats pass.
There are also plenty of romantic settings because so much accommodation is literally over the water. Sunset from a Caribbean dock is a completely different experience from sitting in a conventional hotel restaurant.
And because the islands are close together, you don't necessarily have to choose between activity and relaxation. You can spend the morning somewhere wild and remote and be back in a restaurant in Bocas Town that evening.
The beaches aren't all the same either
One reason Bocas works for different generations is that its beaches offer different experiences.
Some have relatively calm water suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Others have stronger surf and attract surfers. Some are developed with restaurants and bars nearby, while others are much more isolated. The official tourism information specifically points out this contrast between calm beaches and beaches with stronger waves.
Playa Bluff, for example, is famous for surfing and its wild Caribbean atmosphere. Carenero has different beaches and surf spots, while Bastimentos offers everything from Red Frog Beach to much more remote beaches such as Wizard and Polo.
This variety is important because a family with small children, a twenty year old surfer and a sixty year old couple may all want something completely different from a beach.
And then there is the wildlife
Bocas is not simply a beach and party destination. The islands contain an extraordinary amount of biodiversity.
You can see sloths, monkeys, frogs, birds, marine life and reptiles, while the surrounding Caribbean contains coral reefs, tropical fish, rays, dolphins and sea turtles. Bocas is also an important turtle nesting area, with hawksbill, leatherback and green turtles using beaches in the region.
For someone who loves wildlife, this can completely change the character of the trip. Suddenly Bocas isn't about which bar is open tonight. It is about whether you can spot a sloth in the trees, whether the sea is calm enough for snorkeling or whether you can see turtles nesting after dark.
That side of Bocas works for almost any age.
So, is Bocas for young people or everyone?
The honest answer is both.
If you are 20, travelling alone, staying in a hostel and looking to meet people, Bocas can be one of the easiest places in Panama to make friends. The social scene, hostels, surfing, boat trips and nightlife make it almost tailor made for young backpackers.
If you are 30 or 40 and travelling as a couple, you can choose a boutique hotel or quieter island and have a completely different experience.
If you are 50, 60 or older and love nature, beaches, snorkeling, diving, good food and Caribbean culture, there is absolutely no reason Bocas should be off your list.
And if you are travelling with children, there are family friendly hotels and plenty of daytime activities, although choosing a quieter area rather than the centre of Bocas Town may make the experience considerably more comfortable.
The biggest mistake is therefore not being too old for Bocas. The biggest mistake is choosing the wrong part of Bocas for the holiday you actually want.
Bocas Town is social, lively and convenient. Carenero can give you a mixture of island life, beaches and access to town. Bastimentos offers more wilderness, wildlife and nature. Other parts of Isla Colón, particularly around Bluff Beach, can feel dramatically quieter than the centre.
So if someone tells you that Bocas del Toro is "only for young backpackers," don't believe them completely. They are describing one version of Bocas.
The beautiful thing about the islands is that you can choose your own version. Party Bocas, surfing Bocas, family Bocas, romantic Bocas, wildlife Bocas, diving Bocas, luxury Bocas or completely lazy Caribbean hammock Bocas are all hiding within the same archipelago. And that is exactly why people of very different ages can fall in love with it.
