Panama is an extraordinary place for wild cats. Despite being a relatively small country, it is home to six native species of wild feline: the jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay (tigrillo), jaguarundi and oncilla.
Of these, three stand out because of their size and reputation: the jaguar, the puma and the ocelot.
They all hunt mammals, they can all be found in forested environments, and they can overlap in some of the same landscapes. Yet they are remarkably different animals. One is an enormously powerful ambush predator capable of killing large prey with a crushing bite. Another is a long-ranging, adaptable cat found across an enormous portion of the Americas. The third is a much smaller spotted predator that, despite its size, appears to be the most abundant of the three in Panama.
And that creates a fascinating question:
If you walked into a Panamanian rainforest, which of these cats would you be most likely to find?
The answer is probably not the one most people expect.
First, put the three cats into perspective
The easiest way to understand them is to imagine a size ladder.
At the top is the jaguar (Panthera onca).
Then comes the puma (Puma concolor).
And considerably farther down is the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), also commonly called the manigordo in Panama.
Panama's municipal government describes the jaguar as the country's largest wild cat, with the puma second and the ocelot third.
But size isn't everything.
The puma actually has some advantages that the jaguar doesn't, particularly when it comes to adapting to different landscapes and travelling over enormous territories.
And the ocelot has an advantage of its own:
There can be a lot more of them.
The Jaguar: Panama's king of the forest
The jaguar is in a completely different league physically.
It is the largest cat in the Americas, and it is built like a tank.
A jaguar has a massive head, incredibly powerful jaws, thick shoulders and a compact muscular body. Unlike the more slender puma, the jaguar looks designed for brute force.
Its famous rosette patterns provide camouflage in the dappled light of tropical forest.
Some jaguars are also melanistic, meaning their fur appears almost completely black. In the right light, however, the underlying rosette pattern can still be seen.
Jaguars are particularly associated with forests, wetlands, rivers and other areas where prey is abundant.
And they are remarkably comfortable around water.
A jaguar can swim well and may hunt animals around rivers and lakes. Their diet can include peccaries, deer, capybaras, turtles, caimans and numerous smaller animals.
That enormous jaw is particularly important.
Jaguars have an unusually powerful bite for their size and can use their teeth to penetrate the skulls or shells of prey that would be difficult for many other predators to handle.
This is one reason they occupy such an important position in the ecosystem.
They aren't simply another forest predator.
They are an apex predator.
Jaguars are much rarer than they once were
The problem is that Panama's forests are increasingly divided by roads, farms, cattle ranches and human settlements.
Jaguars need large areas of connected habitat, and when forests become fragmented, their populations become more vulnerable.
They also require substantial prey.
If a forest loses peccaries, deer and other large mammals, supporting a jaguar becomes much more difficult.
There is also the problem of conflict with cattle ranchers.
When a jaguar kills livestock, ranchers can sometimes retaliate by killing the cat.
Panama's Ministry of Environment identifies habitat loss, declining prey populations, human pressure and conflicts with livestock production among the major threats facing the country's wild cats.
Current estimates vary considerably depending on methodology and geographic area.
A recent government-supported jaguar census reported an estimate of 270 jaguars across approximately 2.88 million hectares in eastern Panama, equivalent to about 38% of the country's territory.
Other conservation organizations give lower estimates for the country's total free-ranging population, with Yaguará Panamá currently describing the national population as fewer than 200 individuals.
The difference illustrates an important point:
Panama does not yet have a single universally agreed national jaguar population figure.
Counting an animal that moves through enormous areas of dense rainforest is extraordinarily difficult.
But there is no doubt about the direction of the problem: jaguars are far less numerous than ocelots.
The Puma: Panama's wandering cat
If the jaguar is the heavyweight, the puma is the athlete.
The puma is sometimes called a cougar or mountain lion, although in Panama you will generally hear puma more often.
It has an enormous geographic range, extending from Canada through Central America and deep into South America.
Unlike the jaguar, the puma is not dependent on tropical rainforest.
It can live in forests, mountains, grasslands, scrub and surprisingly dry environments.
That adaptability is one of the reasons it has survived across such a huge part of the Americas.
Physically, the puma is immediately recognizable.
It has a relatively small head compared with its body, long legs and a long tail. Its coat is generally a uniform tan, reddish-brown or grayish colour rather than being covered in spots.
The puma is therefore much easier to distinguish from a jaguar once you see the two animals side by side.
The puma's greatest advantage: space
One of the most fascinating differences between these cats is the size of their territories.
A major review of research on jaguars, pumas and ocelots found that pumas have, on average, dramatically larger home ranges than either jaguars or ocelots.
Across the studies examined, the mean home range was approximately:
Puma: 282 km²
Jaguar: 129 km²
Ocelot: 12 km²
Those figures vary enormously depending on habitat and sex, but the overall pattern is striking.
A puma may need an enormous territory to find enough prey.
This has an important consequence for understanding Panama.
You might have a forest that contains pumas without there being very many individual pumas living there.
The animal's enormous range makes it naturally more difficult to encounter.
Pumas and jaguars aren't simply competing for the same food
They certainly can overlap.
But their hunting strategies and prey preferences aren't identical.
Pumas often concentrate on medium-sized mammals such as agoutis, pacas, armadillos, raccoons and deer, although they are capable of killing much larger animals.
Jaguars, meanwhile, are more capable of tackling very large prey.
This difference can reduce direct competition.
There is also an intriguing relationship between the two species: where both occur, jaguars can sometimes dominate pumas because they are larger and more powerful.
The puma's response can involve changes in movement, habitat use or prey selection.
In other words, the rainforest isn't simply divided into territories marked by invisible boundaries.
There is an entire ecological chess game taking place between predators.
The Ocelot: The little cat that dominates in numbers
Now comes the surprise.
The ocelot is dramatically smaller than either a jaguar or a puma.
But in Panama, it appears to be the most abundant of the three.
Panama's Ministry of Environment explicitly describes the ocelot, or manigordo, as the country's most abundant wild cat and says it can be found practically throughout Panama, particularly wherever forest remnants remain.
This is remarkable when you consider how different the animal is from a jaguar.
An adult ocelot typically weighs only a fraction of a jaguar.
But it doesn't need a jaguar's enormous territory.
It can survive on smaller prey.
And it can exploit habitats where a jaguar might struggle to maintain a viable population.
The ocelot is a miniature leopard that isn't a leopard
The ocelot's appearance is probably its most recognizable characteristic.
Its coat is covered in dark spots, streaks and rosettes arranged across a golden, yellowish or grayish background.
From a distance, it can look like a miniature leopard.
But it isn't closely related to a leopard.
It is a member of the Leopardus lineage of smaller American cats.
The markings also make it surprisingly difficult to spot in the forest.
A sleeping ocelot beneath vegetation can become almost completely invisible.
Then it opens its eyes.
Suddenly you realize you've been standing only metres away from a wild predator.
Ocelots don't need enormous prey
This is one of the reasons they can be so successful.
An ocelot can survive on relatively small animals.
Its diet can include rodents, agoutis, reptiles, amphibians and birds, among other prey. Panama's Ministry of Environment specifically mentions animals such as ñeques (agoutis), spiny rats and sloths among its prey.
Because its food requirements are much lower than those of a jaguar, an ocelot can maintain a territory that is tiny by comparison.
Research on Barro Colorado Island in Panama produced an estimated ocelot density of approximately 1.59 to 1.74 animals per square kilometre, depending on the method used. The researchers described this as the highest reported ocelot density within the species' range at the time.
That is an astonishing number compared with the densities generally associated with large cats.
It means that in a healthy Panamanian forest, there can be numerous ocelots moving through an area where you might never see a jaguar.
Why don't you see ocelots everywhere?
Because they're masters of avoiding people.
Ocelots are predominantly nocturnal and solitary.
They move through vegetation at night, hunt quietly and spend daylight hours resting.
That means the average visitor to Panama can walk through an incredibly healthy ocelot habitat and never realize one is nearby.
Camera traps tell a very different story.
Scientists can put cameras along forest trails and discover that an area that seems almost devoid of large wildlife is actually being visited regularly by ocelots.
This is one reason camera trapping has revolutionized wildlife research in Panama.
The animals don't have to know we're there.
The cameras simply wait.
So which has the largest population in Panama?
If we're comparing these three species, the best answer is:
1. Ocelot — probably by far the most numerous
Panama's Ministry of Environment explicitly identifies the ocelot as the country's most abundant wild feline.
2. Puma — more widespread, but lower-density
Pumas have an enormous geographic range and are adaptable, but their huge home ranges mean populations are naturally less dense than those of ocelots.
3. Jaguar — the rarest of the three
Jaguars require extensive habitat and substantial prey and are particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation and conflict with cattle ranching. Current Panamanian estimates suggest a population numbering only in the low hundreds or fewer, depending on the area and methodology used.
So the fascinating paradox is:
The smallest of the three is the most numerous.
There is another fascinating difference: their feet
The three cats are built for different lifestyles.
A jaguar has enormously powerful forequarters and jaws. It is a short-range powerhouse designed to overpower prey.
A puma has long legs and a relatively slender body, making it an excellent stalker and jumper. It can cover enormous distances and navigate a wide variety of terrain.
The ocelot is built for moving through dense vegetation.
It doesn't need to chase a deer across open ground.
It needs to move quietly through the understory and detect something small enough to kill.
Three predators.
Three completely different solutions to the same fundamental problem:
How do you survive in a tropical forest?
The cats also occupy different ecological niches
This is perhaps the most fascinating part of the comparison.
A jaguar sitting at the top of the food chain can influence populations of large prey.
A puma occupies another large-predator niche and can travel across enormous landscapes.
An ocelot operates much lower in terms of prey size but can occur in considerably higher densities.
Together, they create layers of predation.
Remove one predator and the effects can spread through the ecosystem.
Panama's Ministry of Environment emphasizes that its six wild cat species help regulate vertebrate populations and contribute to healthy ecosystems.
The cats are therefore not simply beautiful animals.
They are part of the machinery of the rainforest.
And then there are the other three cats
Panama actually has three additional wild cats that are even more mysterious.
The margay, or tigrillo, is smaller than an ocelot and extraordinarily adapted to life in trees.
The jaguarundi looks almost nothing like a conventional cat, with an elongated body and small rounded ears.
And the oncilla is a tiny spotted forest cat that is particularly elusive.
All six species occur somewhere within Panama's ecosystems.
That means Panama is home to an entire miniature cat community.
And many visitors don't realize it.
Where are you most likely to encounter them?
If your goal is simply to see evidence of wild cats, the ocelot is the obvious candidate.
Ocelots occur across a much broader range of Panama's forested landscapes and can survive in forest fragments where larger cats would struggle.
For jaguars, the situation is very different.
The strongest remaining populations are associated with large, connected forests, particularly in eastern Panama and the Darién, while important populations also persist in other protected landscapes.
Pumas can occur across a much broader range of habitats and are more geographically flexible.
But there is an important distinction:
Presence does not mean visibility.
You can be in perfect puma habitat and never see one.
You can be walking through excellent jaguar habitat and never even know a jaguar passed nearby.
And you can have ocelots living around you without seeing one because they're moving through the forest while you're asleep.
The incredible mystery of the Panamanian night
This is perhaps what makes these animals so fascinating.
Imagine walking through a Panamanian forest after dark.
You hear insects everywhere.
A frog calls.
Something rustles in the leaves.
A branch moves above you.
You shine your flashlight toward the darkness.
Nothing.
But somewhere nearby, a spotted ocelot could be moving silently through the vegetation.
Farther away, a puma may be travelling along a forest trail.
And somewhere deep in a much larger territory, a jaguar could be following the scent of a peccary herd.
Three cats occupying the same country.
Three completely different lifestyles.
And almost all of them remain invisible to us.
The real winner is the forest
The differences between these cats ultimately demonstrate why large, connected forests are so important to Panama.
The jaguar needs enormous landscapes.
The puma needs room to roam.
The ocelot needs dense vegetation and healthy populations of smaller prey.
Protecting one species therefore often protects many others.
This is why wildlife corridors are so important. A forest fragment isn't necessarily enough if animals cannot move between it and other protected areas.
Panama's position as a biological bridge between North and South America makes this especially significant.
A connected forest allows animals to move.
A fragmented forest creates islands.
And eventually, even an adaptable predator can run out of places to go.
Three cats, three personalities
If you had to describe the three in a few words, the jaguar is the powerhouse, the puma is the wanderer, and the ocelot is the secretive survivor.
The jaguar commands respect because of its extraordinary size and strength.
The puma fascinates because it has conquered one of the largest geographic ranges of any land mammal in the Americas.
And the ocelot is perhaps the most surprising of all: a relatively small cat that has managed to become the most abundant wild feline in Panama.
That makes the ocelot a particularly important reminder that in nature, being bigger doesn't necessarily mean being more successful.
The jaguar may be the king.
The puma may be the great traveller.
But in the hidden nighttime world of Panama's forests, the little spotted ocelot may be the one you have the best chance of having quietly walk past you without ever knowing it was there.
