If you spend enough time travelling around Panama, you may notice something that seems slightly strange at first: the trunks of some coconut and other palm trees are painted white near the bottom.
At first glance, it can look purely decorative. A row of palms with bright white trunks certainly looks neat and orderly, and in some places the practice is used to make roads, gardens and public spaces look more maintained.
But there are also practical reasons for painting tree trunks white.
And in tropical Panama, where heat, humidity, insects, fungi and intense rainfall create a challenging environment for plants, the tradition makes particular sense.
It isn't usually paint in the ordinary sense
The white coating traditionally used on tree trunks is often lime-based, rather than the same type of decorative paint you would put on a house.
The process is commonly called whitewashing.
Lime has been used historically on tree trunks in many parts of the world because it is inexpensive, readily available and can create a protective coating.
The exact mixture varies considerably. Some people use hydrated lime diluted with water, while others may add substances intended to improve adhesion.
So when you see a brilliantly white tree trunk beside a road in Panama, you're not necessarily looking at someone who decided to paint a palm tree with leftover house paint.
There may be an agricultural or maintenance tradition behind it.
One reason is insects
One of the traditional reasons for whitewashing trunks is pest management.
Tree trunks can provide hiding places for insects and other organisms.
A lime coating can alter the surface environment and has historically been used as part of efforts to discourage certain pests.
This practice is particularly associated with fruit trees in many tropical and subtropical agricultural regions.
But there is an important caveat:
whitewashing isn't a magic insecticide.
It shouldn't be assumed that painting the bottom of a coconut palm will eliminate pests.
Modern pest management relies on identifying the actual insect or disease and using appropriate control methods.
Still, the traditional practice has persisted because it can have some practical value in certain circumstances.
Fungi and tropical humidity
Panama is extraordinarily humid in many regions.
Humidity is wonderful for tropical vegetation, but it is also wonderful for fungi and microorganisms.
A damaged or persistently wet area of bark can become vulnerable to infection.
Lime is alkaline, and that alkaline environment can make the surface less hospitable to some organisms.
This is one reason lime-based trunk treatments have historically been used in orchards.
Again, however, this should not be confused with a universal cure for fungal disease.
A healthy tree doesn't necessarily need its trunk painted.
The white surface reflects sunlight
There is another fascinating reason for the practice:
white reflects sunlight.
A dark tree trunk absorbs solar radiation and heats up.

For a coconut palm growing under intense tropical sunshine, the effect may be less important than it is for certain fruit trees.
But the principle remains.
White reflects.
Dark absorbs.
So why do it to coconut palms?
This is where things get more interesting.
Coconut palms don't necessarily need whitewashing in order to survive Panama's climate.
They are extraordinarily well adapted to tropical environments.
A coconut palm can handle intense sunlight, salt spray, heavy rainfall and tropical heat.
So if you see the bottom of a coconut palm painted white, it doesn't automatically mean the tree has a problem.
The reason may have more to do with landscaping, tradition, pest prevention or simply appearance.
In many places, whitewashed trunks are part of a broader maintenance style.
You may see them along roadsides, around parks, near hotels, at entrances to properties or around agricultural areas.
Sometimes it's simply about making things look clean
This is probably one of the most overlooked explanations.
A freshly whitewashed tree trunk looks clean and deliberate.
If you have a row of palms along a road, painting the lower sections white makes them visually uniform.
It can make a rural road, resort, garden or public area look more maintained.
The contrast between a white trunk and green tropical vegetation is also extremely striking.
The practice therefore becomes partly aesthetic.
It's similar to painting curbs, fences or roadside posts.
It creates a visual boundary between what is maintained and what is wild.
And Panama has plenty of both.
White trunks can make trees easier to see
There can also be a visibility benefit.
A bright white trunk is easier to see at night than a dark brown or grey trunk.
Along roads or paths, that can make trees more visible to drivers and pedestrians.
It is not the same as proper road lighting or reflective signage, of course, but in rural areas every bit of visibility can help.
A row of white-painted trunks can effectively become a series of visual markers.
This is one reason the practice appears in many countries around the world.
It's part of a much bigger tropical tradition
If you've travelled through Latin America, you may have seen whitewashed trees in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
You may even have seen entire rows of trees with their lower trunks painted white.
It isn't uniquely Panamanian.
The tradition has deep agricultural roots throughout the region.
And different communities have their own explanations for it.
One person may tell you it is for insects.
Another may say it's for fungi.
Another may say it keeps the trunk cool.
Another may simply say:
"That's how we've always done it."
All of these explanations can coexist because whitewashing has historically served several purposes.
Why only the bottom?
This is another clue.
If the purpose were simply decoration, someone could paint the entire tree.
But traditionally, only the lower section of the trunk is treated.
That's the part most accessible to people.
It's also the part most likely to encounter:
soil
mud
splashing water
crawling insects
weeds
mechanical damage
animals
human contact
The lower trunk is essentially the tree's vulnerable "working zone."
So applying a protective coating there makes more sense than coating the entire palm.
It can also discourage people from damaging the trunk
There's a psychological effect too.
A freshly whitewashed tree looks cared for.
People may be less likely to cut into it, carve their names into it or damage it.
In a managed landscape, the white band can communicate:
This tree is being maintained.
That may sound insignificant, but visual cues are surprisingly powerful.
But painting a tree isn't always a good idea
This is important.
You shouldn't assume that putting any kind of paint on a tree is beneficial.
Some commercial paints contain chemicals that can damage living tissues, interfere with normal gas exchange or otherwise harm the tree.
Ordinary household paint is not automatically an appropriate tree treatment.
If whitewashing is being done for an agricultural reason, the correct lime preparation and application method matter.
And there is generally little reason for someone to randomly paint a healthy coconut palm in their backyard unless they have a specific purpose.
Traditional doesn't automatically mean harmless.
The danger of covering damaged palms
Coconut palms can suffer from mechanical damage, pests and disease.
If someone paints over a damaged area without understanding what caused the damage, the white coating can simply hide the problem.
A palm with a serious trunk injury needs to be assessed rather than cosmetically disguised.
This is particularly important in Panama because tropical conditions can allow biological problems to develop quickly.
Whitewashing versus modern pest control
Agriculture has changed dramatically.
Farmers today have access to biological controls, targeted pesticides, fungicides, monitoring techniques and integrated pest-management systems.
Whitewashing can sometimes form one small part of a broader management strategy, but it shouldn't be treated as a substitute for proper diagnosis.
If a palm has a serious infestation, painting the trunk white won't magically solve it.
The most important question is always:
What is actually attacking the tree?
The visual effect is undeniably beautiful
Even if the original reason is practical, there is no denying the aesthetic effect.
Imagine a tropical road lined with coconut palms.
Green fronds overhead.
Blue sky.
Dense vegetation.
And then, at eye level, a series of bright white trunks.
The contrast is dramatic.
It gives the landscape a slightly surreal appearance.
For tourists, it can even become part of the visual identity of a particular village, resort or road.
The white trunks almost become a form of tropical landscaping.
Why Panama is a perfect place to notice the tradition
Panama has an extraordinary combination of conditions that make palm trees almost unavoidable.
There are Caribbean beaches.
Pacific beaches.
Islands.
Rainforest.
Rural roads.
Hotels.
Agricultural communities.
Small towns.
And enormous numbers of coconut palms and other tropical trees.
That means you encounter trees in very different contexts.
One palm may be growing naturally on a beach.
Another may be carefully landscaped outside a hotel.
Another may be beside someone's house.
Another may be growing in an agricultural area.
If you see a whitewashed trunk, the reason can depend heavily on that context.
Don't assume every white palm has the same story
This is probably the most important takeaway.
A white trunk could indicate:
traditional agricultural practice.
pest-management efforts.
fungal prevention.
sun protection.
landscaping.
roadside visibility.
cultural tradition.
Or simply:
someone likes the way it looks.
And sometimes it can be several of these simultaneously.
That's what makes the practice so interesting.
A tiny detail that reveals a much bigger story
One of the wonderful things about travelling through Panama is that the country is full of little details that initially seem meaningless.
A white line around a tree.
A house on stilts.
A banana leaf wrapped around food.
A roadside fruit stand.
A particular roof design.
A patch of sugar cane.
A field of rice.
Look closer and suddenly there is an entire story behind it.
The whitewashed coconut palm is a perfect example.
It isn't necessarily an exotic botanical treatment.
It isn't necessarily a sign that the tree is sick.
And it isn't necessarily just decoration.
It is part of a much older tradition of working with tropical landscapes and managing the plants that live in them.
So the next time you're travelling through Panama and notice a row of coconut palms with brilliant white trunks, take a second look.
The white isn't really the interesting part.
The interesting part is why somebody decided that this particular tree, in this particular place, needed to be white.
And sometimes the answer is agricultural.
Sometimes it's cultural.
Sometimes it's practical.
And sometimes, quite simply, it just looks good.
