When people picture Panama, they usually imagine turquoise Caribbean water, palm trees bending in the breeze, tropical rainforests dripping with humidity, and enormous ships gliding through the Panama Canal. Earthquakes are not usually part of the mental picture. But Panama is not geologically asleep. Panama does get earthquakes, and more frequently than many visitors realize. The good news is that most are small and cause little or no damage. Panama's seismic story is fascinating because the country sits in a complicated geological neighborhood where several tectonic plates interact, yet it generally experiences less destructive seismic activity than some of its neighbors in Central America.

To understand Panama's earthquakes, you have to look beyond the country's borders. Panama sits near the interaction zones of several tectonic plates, including the Cocos, Nazca, Caribbean and South American plates. Offshore, particularly on the Pacific side, tectonic forces are constantly reshaping the seafloor. The country itself is part of a region created by tremendous geological forces over millions of years. Central America is essentially a giant geological meeting place, and Panama occupies an unusual position within it.

Unlike places such as Chile or Japan, Panama is not located directly along one of the world's most notorious continuous subduction zones. That helps explain why Panama does not experience the enormous frequency of major earthquakes seen in some other parts of the Pacific Ring of Fire. But "less active" definitely does not mean "inactive."

Panama experiences numerous small earthquakes every year, many of which are too weak for humans to notice. Seismometers can detect earthquakes that would pass completely unnoticed by anyone sitting in a hostel, walking through Panama City, hiking through the mountains or relaxing on a Caribbean beach. Occasionally, however, an earthquake is strong enough for people to feel it. You might be sitting inside a building when suddenly the windows rattle or a hanging light begins to swing slightly. Someone looks up and asks, "Did you feel that?" Within seconds, everyone is checking their phones.

If you look at Panama's earthquake geography, the Pacific side becomes particularly interesting. The waters around the country's southern coastline are associated with active tectonic structures, and earthquakes occur offshore as well as on land. Areas around Chiriquí and the Gulf of Chiriquí have experienced notable seismic activity. This is particularly fascinating for anyone traveling through western Panama because the region combines mountains, volcanoes, deep valleys and an active geological history.

The area around Volcán Barú, for example, is not just spectacular because of its enormous mountain and volcanic landscape. It is part of a landscape ultimately created by the same enormous geological forces that have shaped Central America. The Pacific coast of Panama is essentially a front row seat to an enormous geological machine operating beneath the ocean.

Panama has also experienced significant earthquakes throughout its history. Historical records document damaging earthquakes affecting different parts of the country, including events around Panama City and western Panama. This is important because Panama's relatively quiet reputation can sometimes create the impression that earthquakes simply are not part of the country's natural hazards. They are. They just are not usually the headline act.

If you are staying in Panama City, you might be surprised to learn that earthquakes are possible there too. The city is not sitting directly on one of the world's most notorious earthquake faults, but seismic waves from earthquakes elsewhere in the region can still be felt. There is also another interesting factor. Modern buildings can respond very differently to an earthquake than older structures.

Panama City has transformed dramatically over the past few decades, and its skyline now contains enormous towers of concrete and glass. When a building is very tall, even relatively modest movement can sometimes feel dramatic. A person on a high floor might notice gentle swaying that someone standing outside barely perceives. That does not necessarily mean the earthquake is extremely powerful. Tall buildings are designed to move somewhat rather than behaving like completely rigid objects.

The mountains are another fascinating part of Panama's seismic story. Panama's mountain regions have their own seismic history, and western Panama is particularly geologically interesting. The mountains of Chiriquí are part of a volcanic and tectonic landscape that looks tranquil today but was created through immense geological forces.

Places such as Boquete, Volcán, Cerro Punta and the mountains around the Fortuna area are surrounded by evidence of Panama's volcanic past. The landscape is full of clues: deep valleys, steep ridges, volcanic rocks, hot springs, waterfalls and enormous mountain systems. Beneath all of it is the slow movement of Earth's crust.

It is easy to look across a peaceful cloud forest and forget that the landscape beneath you is constantly changing. The difference is that geological change usually happens on a timescale far too slow for humans to notice. A mountain can appear permanent to us while the planet underneath it is constantly shifting.

Travelers also often lump Panama and Costa Rica together because they are neighboring Central American countries. Geologically, however, their seismic environments are not identical. Costa Rica is considerably more seismically active and experiences earthquakes frequently, including occasional damaging events. Panama can certainly experience earthquakes, but its overall seismic activity is generally lower.

That difference can be surprising when you realize just how close the two countries are. The Earth's tectonic boundaries do not care much about political borders. A geological process does not stop at a border crossing because someone put up a sign saying "Bienvenidos a Panamá."

Whenever earthquakes and coastlines appear in the same conversation, another question naturally follows: Could Panama experience a tsunami? The answer is yes. Tsunamis are possible in Panama because the country has extensive Pacific and Caribbean coastlines and sits within a broader region where underwater earthquakes can occur.

That does not mean Panama is constantly waiting for a giant wave. Tsunamis require particular conditions, usually involving significant displacement of the seafloor, and most earthquakes do not produce tsunamis. The Pacific coastline is especially important because of the much greater tectonic activity throughout the Pacific basin.

For travelers, the important lesson is not to become paranoid about every earthquake. It is simply to understand that earthquakes and tsunamis are genuine natural hazards in Panama, even though major events are uncommon. Basic awareness is sensible, particularly when traveling near the coast or staying in unfamiliar buildings.

One reason people do not hear much about Panama's earthquakes is simple: most earthquakes are boring. That is actually a very good thing. A small earthquake detected by scientific instruments is unlikely to become international news. There might be a magnitude 3 earthquake somewhere offshore, a few people feel a slight vibration, scientists record it and life continues.

Meanwhile, a powerful earthquake that causes major destruction becomes global news within minutes. This creates a psychological problem because people tend to associate earthquakes with spectacular disasters. Scientifically, however, earthquakes come in an enormous range of sizes, and the overwhelming majority are small. Panama gets plenty of those small earthquakes. The big ones are much less common.

For travelers who have never experienced an earthquake, even a relatively weak one can be surprisingly strange. You are sitting perfectly still when suddenly the floor seems to move. A door rattles. A window vibrates. Maybe the building makes a strange noise. Your brain takes a moment to understand what is happening.

Then someone says, "Earthquake!"

In a backpacker hostel, this can become particularly memorable. Imagine a dormitory somewhere in the Panamanian mountains. Ten travelers from ten different countries are sleeping when the building suddenly begins gently shaking. Someone wakes up. Someone else thinks it is a truck. Another person thinks somebody is jumping on the floor. Then the shaking stops.

Five minutes later, everyone is sitting around discussing earthquakes while somebody checks the magnitude on their phone. For most travelers, that is probably about as dramatic as their personal experience with Panama's seismic side will ever become.

For the average traveler, there is no reason to avoid Panama because of earthquakes. Earthquakes are simply one of many natural hazards that exist in the country, alongside heavy tropical rain, flooding, landslides, strong currents, lightning and volcanic hazards. The sensible approach is awareness rather than fear.

If you are staying somewhere unfamiliar, know where the exits are and pay attention to basic safety information. If an earthquake occurs, move away from windows and objects that could fall and follow the safety instructions of the building or local authorities. If you are near the coast and experience a strong or prolonged earthquake, pay attention to official tsunami warnings and evacuation instructions.

None of this means you should spend your Panama trip staring nervously at the floor. Quite the opposite. Understanding the risks allows you to enjoy the country with considerably more confidence.

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about Panama's earthquakes is that they reveal something much bigger about the country. Panama looks peaceful. The rainforest grows quietly. Rivers carve through mountains. Clouds roll over the Cordillera de Talamanca. Sloths sleep in trees. Whales pass offshore. Ships slowly cross the Canal.

But underneath all of it, the planet is moving.

The mountains were not always there. The land connecting North and South America was not always there. The Pacific and Caribbean landscapes have been repeatedly reshaped by volcanic eruptions, uplift, erosion and tectonic movement.

Panama is therefore much more than a tropical bridge between two continents. It is a geological story still being written. Most of the time, you will not feel a single word of it. But occasionally, the ground reminds you.

Panama does get earthquakes. Usually they are small. Sometimes they are noticeable. Rarely, they can be destructive. And beneath the lush forests, beaches and mountains that make Panama famous, the enormous geological forces responsible for creating this extraordinary country are still very much alive.
